Pope Francis’ Milestone Visit to Iraq

A noted philanthropist and activist, Springfield, Missouri resident Nadia Cavner focuses her attention towards a number of non-profit organizations. Nadia is a devoted member of the Assyrian Church of the East and Cavner is passionate about a number of issues in the country of Iraq.

In a milestone visit, Pope Francis became the first leader of the Roman Catholic church to visit Iraq in March 2021. Even though the world was still feeling the effects of the pandemic, Pope Francis was undeterred as he sought to help them with sectarianism and persecutions. The trip’s goal was to create and nurture ties with the Shiite Muslims and bring encouragement to the Christians in the country. The three day long visit was done to assist one of the hardest hit countries in the past 12 months including the pandemic, civil wars, and terrorist attacks.

The pope also helped Iraq distribute vaccines in order to help the country better resist the coronavirus. It was Pope’s first travel internationally after a year of staying away from the public in Rome.
